SWFLYAS MEETING NEWS - March 2004
Boy and His Dog - Norman Rockwell Press release and member announcement for
The Southwest Florida Young Anglers’ Society

Members and Friends,

The Southwest Florida Young Anglers Society held it's February fishing trip on Saturday, the 28th. It was a bone-chilling 51 degrees on the water with fierce winds of 10 knots. The bitter cold of the February winter in SW Florida kept all but the most determined off the water and the beaches that day. :)

In spite of the in climate weather the intercoastal was nice and flat with a gentle incoming tide as "The Other Woman", skippered by Cliff Ball (member Steven Ball's father), made for the fishery in Estero Bay. New member, Logan Shaud, caught the first fish of the day! A nice whiting, right in Big Carlos Pass! Being the ethical angler, Logan quickly dislodged the hook and neatly returned the fish neatly to the water. Fishing the incoming tide through Big Carlos Pass and New Pass the members aboard were able to share fishing tips, techniques, and stories as well as enjoy fishing one of Florida's finest estuaries.

The March fishing trip will be at Lakes Park in South Lee County. Lakes Park is an excellent fresh/brackish water estuary that is the home to not only Large-Mouth Bass, Tilapia, but also Snook! There are alot of other fresh-water species to catch at Lakes Park as well. Come prepared to spend a fishing day at the park! Bring fresh water baits such as lures, worms, shiners, etc. I have found a Carolina-rigged, pumpkin seed soft plastic worm works well for bass. If you need advice, don't hesitate to contact me (I'll ask Trevor!), or you can always contact Paula (or her sons) at the Estero River Tackle & Canoe Outfitters for expert fresh water advice. Up in North Fort Myers, Dave Westra of Lehr's Economy Tackle is a wealth of fresh water information as well. Let's meet on the boardwalk at about 9am and we'll fish various areas throughout the park. Be sure all adults are properly licensed for fresh water fishing if they are going to be holding a rod. Otherwise, KIDS ARE FREE!! See you there!
