Boy and His Dog - Norman Rockwell Press release and member announcement for
The Southwest Florida Young Anglers’ Society

Members and Friends,

The Southwest Florida Young Anglers' Society met at Wiggins Pass inside Wiggins Pass State Park, Naples for it's May fishing trip. The day was perfect, the water clear and 80 degrees. There was an abundance of baitfish. The tide was incoming and strong. All conditions seemed perfect, except fishing was terribly slow. Most every type of bait was thrown out. Shrimp, jigs, spoons, pinfish, soft plastic crank baits, and most everything in each anglers' arsenal was used, to no avail. The afternoon bite turned on a little and a few short mangrove snapper were caught. Some rather 'odd', non-target fish were caught such as the occasional puffer fish, lizard fish, and dogfish. Some of the members reported several hook-ups with something large moving offshore. The fish was never successfully 'turned' and if the member's line was wasn't broken off, the bait had been cleanly stripped. There was alot of speculation of what kind of fish that was. Later in the afternoon, everyone was invited to the Hires' home for swimming in the pool and fishing from the dock. The early evening in the salt water canal produced two small snook. It was an excellent family day!

The membership discussed and elected to hold the June 2004 fishing trip on Sunday June 27th at the Southern fishing pier at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on I-275 south of St. Petersburg. We believe the best way to get everyone together and coordinated is to meet at the McDonalds located at Corkscrew Road & Ben Hill Griffin Pky. We are planning on leaving at 7 AM. This should put us on the fishing spot at 8:45-9am. The fishing pier is very unusual. It is a section of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge spanning Tampa Bay and anglers can drive on the bridge. There is a small bait & tackle store on the pier. We want to be able to all travel in a caravan together. Please contact me if you are interested in attending.

See ya'll there!
