Press release and member announcement for
The Southwest Florida Young Anglers’ Society
Greetings Members and Friends,
I hope everyone has had an enjoyable Holiday Season and Safe New
Year!
The next fishing trip and meeting will be held at Bonita Beach
on Saturday, Jan. 24th, 2004. Byron Stout, a highly acclaimed
sports writer and fisherman has offered to visit with us that
afternoon, possibly give some helpful tips and hopefully swap
some fishing stories! Byron has written much about fishing. He
is a columnist in Florida Sportsman as well as the Ft. Myers
News-Press.
We have planned surf fishing on the beach at Bonita. Target
species will include Whiting, Pompano, Red Drum, Mackerel, and
Sheepshead. We are planning on a 'fishing day at the beach'.
Hoping the weather cooperates, we will be spending the day on the
beach fishing and picnicking. We are planning to get to Bonita
Beach Public Beach early and get a 'cabana' and a grill. We are
planning to dig sandfleas and cast-net our bait, catch legal
edible fish, give instruction on fillet, preparation and grilling
fish.
Please be sure to dress appropriate for the weather and bring
sunscreen, snacks, and drinks (as allowed in Lee County Parks),
and your fishing equipment. Hopefully, we will have grilled fish
and whatever else members bring. If the fishing is unproductive,
there is an excellent seaside cafe named "Doc's" just next to the
park.
Future meetings considered to be held at Lover's Key State Park,
Sanibel Lighthouse and Pier, Wiggins Pass/Barefoot Beach, and
Naples Pier. The members will receive instruction and assistance
in targeting game species and baits particular to each estuary
with an emphasis on catch and release and being ethical
anglers.
Visit our web site at by-the-sea.org and click on
the "SWFYAS" icon.
The February meeting will be at Lovers' Key Boat
Ramp on Saturday, Jeb. 28th, 2004 at 8 AM. Please, call to RSVP
on or before 2/21/04
